Blackjack: Other Betting Options Available

To be able to win in blackjack, you must have a hand that will beat the dealer without being busted. A blackjack table will seat six players and the cards used are about six or eight decks that are shuffled together.

Before the dealer deals the players' cards, every player must have made the bets already. If your hand has a higher value than the dealer has, you win and will be paid off one to one. If you have a blackjack or natural, you win and you will be paid of one to one and a half.

Aside from the common player's bet, there are other betting options in blackjack and they are the following:

Insurance - This is a blackjack side bet, which is only allowed if the dealer's up card is an Ace. Up to half of your original bet is against the dealer having a blackjack or natural and if the dealer do have a blackjack, the insurance will pay two to one.

Surrender - It means you are giving up your hand and half of your bet will be lost.

Early Surrender - This is only allowed before the dealer will check the hand for a blackjack.

Late Surrender - The dealer will first check if the dealer's hand has a blackjack. If the dealer has a blackjack, late surrender is not allowed anymore.

Double Down - This is done after the first two cards are already dealt. It will double your original bet but you can only have one additional card to your hand and nothing more. Double down is a good blackjack betting option if you know that your hand is in the advantageous situation.

Even Money - If your first two dealt cards form a natural or blackjack and the dealer's up card is an Ace, this betting option has a payout ratio of one to one and you can cash in your bet at once.

Split Hand - If your first two dealt cards have the same card value, you can split them up to be able to play two separate hands at the same time. Each card will then be the start of two separate hands and you will have to make a second bet equal to the original bet.

Blackjack has the following estimated house advantages: - For players without the basic blackjack strategy, it is 7% on average. - For players who use blackjack basic strategy, it is 0.5% or even a rate lower. - For players who use card counting strategies, they have a 1% advantage against the house.
